Golf: The Beginning Golfer

When you first take up golf, there is always the question
of where to practice?

The best place for beginners to refine their golfing skills
is at a driving range. This is an easy place to examine
your swing and begin your golfing career. At a driving
range, you can hit a load of golf balls anywhere within
reason and nobody around will mind if your shots are
totally wild.

Many driving ranges also have practice putting greens,
chipping areas, and sand bunkers. These are great practice
areas for the golfing beginner. This is also a great way
to brush up on nearly every aspect of your game.

If you feel your golf swing is out of shape and would like
to practice in private, then there is always the option
of practicing your swing in your own backyard. But
when you are in your yard, it maybe best to leave the golf
balls in your golf bag. They are best reserved for the open
areas.

When you feel ready to play a game, don’t try to
jump into the deep end by taking the next plane to St.
Andrews. You will get there, but you must first
practice.

Try some par-3 courses; they usually consist of 9 holes.
This is perfect for practice games because you can practice
your swing and get in some heavy putting practice. Don’t
feel discouraged starting on a par-3; even Tiger Woods had
to start somewhere.

You must hone your skills to become a master of the game
and the only way to do that is through practice.

When you feel you are ready for the 18 hole experience, ask
for some recommendations, because you will need a lengthy
course without all the hazards that ruin a golfer’s
experience. Look around for the best lengthy, wide open
courses. These courses will provide you with the most
enjoyable experience while boosting your confidence and
improving your game.

Retief Goosen PGA Golf Contender

Posted in Golf on November 3rd, 2006

Retief Goosen moved into contention for his first title of the season at the Tour Championship on Thursday.

The double U.S. Open champion carded a two-under-par 68 to share the first-round lead after a gruelling day of blustery winds and plunging temperatures at East Lake Golf Club.

Normally a picture of serenity, Goosen is desperate for a return to the winner’s circle after a frustrating 2006 campaign and believes he is close to matching his impressive form of two years ago.

“It’s just a question of trusting it out there,” the 37-year-old South African told reporters after setting the pace in the PGA Tour’s season-ending event with American Joe Durant.

“This year I have not putted well but, purely because I’ve been hitting the ball so far from the flag, I haven’t had a chance of making any putts.

“You know, it’s going to be a slow process. But I would say I’m probably back now to where I was in ‘04,” added Goosen, who won the second of his U.S. Open titles at Shinnecock Hills two years ago.

The world number six missed the cut at last week’s Chrysler Championship in Florida and has not produced a top-10 finish on the PGA Tour since the Wachovia Championship in May.

Two months ago, he started working with Florida-based swing coach Gregor Jameson and the move seems to be paying off sooner than expected.

“I’ve just not been hitting it well enough,” Goosen added. “I felt maybe I should get somebody in there who’s got a bit of an expert eye.

“It’s been good with Gregor the way we’ve been going about it. We try to keep it simple. I know in my mind what I need to work on.

“There are no real swing changes with what we’re trying to do. It’s more set-up, posture and alignment-type of things.”
